UNCG has adopted WebEx Training Center as its official synchronous learning management (SLMS) solution.
An SLMS enables students to participate in online class meetings from their computer or mobile device, and is used primarily in distance learning and hybrid course situations where some or all of the students are off-campus. In addition to serving basic video-conferencing functions, the SLMS provides a classroom-style atmosphere – participants can “raise their hands” to signal to the instructor as well as use polling tools, break-out groups/rooms, and more.
Information Technology Services (ITS) worked in cooperation with the Division of Continual Learning (DCL) to create a committee of faculty and staff to review SLMS options (see: Synchronous LMS Study). The SLMS committee recommended unanimously that UNCG move to WebEx as the ITS-supported SLMS. The pilot group of faculty and staff members who tested WebEx found that it is best suited to deliver the reliability and flexibility that online instructors and students need. It offers improved user experience and usability across devices.
UNCG’s license for the current SLMS solution, Blackboard Collaborate, ends in May 2016. ITS has already begun work to transition from Blackboard Collaborate, with access to WebEx beginning in early 2016. Learn more at WebEx @ UNCG.
