An upcoming update to the Firefox browser will result in Google Hangouts temporarily not having video and audio functionality. Google is aware of the issue and is working to develop a solution.
Firefox will be upgrading to Firefox version 52, which is scheduled to be released on March 7. Firefox 52 will no longer support plugins as a security precaution. Google Hangouts currently relies on plugin support for video and audio functionality. Hangout users will not be able to make video and audio calls in Firefox 52. The Chat function will continue to operate normally.
Google engineers are working on developing a video and audio solution which does not depend on plugin support. As soon as this solution is available, it will be released.
Users who wish to use Hangout’s video and audio calls should use browsers which support this functionality, including Google Chrome, Microsoft Internet Explorer and Macintosh Safari. In addition, Firefox’s Extended Support Release (ESR) version will continue plugin support.
