Information Technology Services

Who: All faculty and staff who use the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client for remote access

What: Information Technology Services (ITS) is upgrading the AnyConnect VPN client from version 3.1 to version 4.4.

When: Thursday, May 4, 6:30 a.m. – 7:30 a.m.

The AnyConnect VPN service will be unavailable during this maintenance window.

After the upgrade completes, the next time you attempt to establish a VPN connection from a General Computing Network (GCN) host, the AnyConnect VPN client on your computer* will be updated to version 4.4. (*Exception: It will not be auto-updated on Windows 7 computers — see notes under Action Required.)

Action Required

Action required on your part depends upon the operating system you are using on your computer.

Windows 7

For Windows 7 only, your AnyConnect VPN client will NOT be automatically updated starting May 4. This is because ITS is aware of a problem affecting some computers that will cause the install to fail. We anticipate turning on auto-update for Windows 7 approximately two weeks after the May 4 update (this “pause” is to limit possible problems during this busy, end-of-year time.)

In the meantime, you can continue to use AnyConnect 3.1. However, ITS recommends that during this two week period you bring your computer on campus and use the Application Catalog to uninstall AnyConnect 3.1 and install AnyConnect 4.4. If your update attempt on campus fails, please contact 6-TECH, or your dept/school’s Departmental Technology Support (DTS) staff, for assistance with installing the latest client.

Windows 10

If you have previously installed AnyConnect 3.1, no action is required. Cisco AnyConnect will begin the update automatically and should complete within a few minutes. Upon completing the update, you will be reconnected and remote access restored.

If you have not previously installed the AnyConnect VPN client, you should bring your computer on campus and use the Application Catalog to install AnyConnect 4.4.

Mac OSX

No action required: Cisco AnyConnect will begin the update automatically and should complete within a few minutes. Upon completing the update, you will be reconnected and remote access restored.

Linux 64 bit

No action required: Cisco AnyConnect will begin the update automatically and should complete within a few minutes. Upon completing the update, you will be reconnected and remote access restored.

Linux 32 bit

Linux 32 bit will no longer be supported with the new AnyConnect 4.4 client. You may continue to use AnyConnect 3.1 without interruption of service; however, that version will not be supported moving forward. All future AnyConnect versions will support Linux 64 bit only.
