Information Technology Services

Information Technology services (ITS) is currently migrating all ITS-supported campus workstations from Windows 7 to Windows 10.

Windows 10 improves over earlier versions of Windows by offering a more modern operating system that provides new capabilities and greater security. ITS staff have worked to ensure campus users have the best possible experience with Windows 10.

In the Fall of 2016, all ITS-managed open-access computer labs were updated to Windows 10. In addition, since Spring Break users have been able to test drive Windows 10 using the MyCloud Campus Desktop.

We are now planning Windows 10 upgrades for classroom teaching stations, and expect those upgrades will begin in the June/July timeframe.

While Windows 10 and Windows 7 are very similar, ITS understands that any change to classroom technology can have a potential impact on instruction. Therefore, we wish to take a measured approach to this process and strategically upgrade these systems during the Summer in order to minimize any potential conflicts.

Providing Feedback

We are seeking immediate feedback from the users of classroom teaching stations with regard to any potential issues that this upgrade process may cause.

Specifically, we would like to address any concerns related to the following:

  • Specialized software (i.e. software that is installed by faculty for the purposes of instruction)
  • Specialized hardware (i.e. printers/plotters, SmartBoards and similar devices)

If you anticipate any issues with using Windows 10 in the classroom, please contact 6-TECH and reference this message and one of our support staff will contact you to explore potential solutions.

Note: To try Windows 10 now, go to http://mycloud.uncg.edu or use the Citrix Receiver and launch the Campus Desktop (see Accessing MyCloud for further details).

Windows 10 training and documentation is currently under development and will be announced as soon as it’s ready.

Thanks for your input and patience during this transition.
