Who: Faculty and staff with devices on the GCN running Windows 10

What: Installation of Windows 10 Creators update

  • Available to install via AppCat on Friday, August 18
  • Deadline to install is Friday, September 29, 5:30 p.m. EST (earlier installation via AppCat is recommended)

Why: There is currently a mix of Windows 10 v1511, Windows 10 Anniversary Update, and Windows 10 Creators Update running on campus. This update will transition all Windows 10 devices to Creators Update. Also, in keeping with Microsoft’s new rapid release timeline for Windows 10, Windows 10 v1511 will stop receiving security updates in November 2017.

Client action required: Client action is recommended but not required.

Information Technology Services (ITS) recommends that you install the update early, so that you can control when the reboots and start-up delays occur.

If you do not install the update early, then it will run automatically on September 29 at 5:30 p.m. If your computer is powered off at that time, it will be installed the next time the computer starts.

ITS will release Windows 10 1703 (or “Creators Update”) to all GCN faculty/staff Windows 10 devices on August 18. This update will be delivered like all Windows updates – via the Application Catalog.

If you are already running Creators Update, your machine will not be affected. To know if you’re already running this version, follow these instructions. Under version, it will say “1703” if you’re running Creators Update.

Note: This does not apply to devices running Windows 7.

Client Action Recommended

Run the update early. Feature updates take longer to run than traditional Windows updates (approx. 30-45 minutes on average). ITS recommends starting the update before leaving for the day. The device will update overnight and be ready to go the next morning.

  1. Open the Application Catalog and select Updates from the left nav menu.
  2. Click “Feature update to Windows 10 Enterprise, version 1703, en-us” to select it and then click Install.

What if the update fails?
If for some reason the update were to fail, your device should revert back to the previous version of Windows 10. If the update fails or your device fails to revert back, please contact 6-TECH so that a tech can come and look at your device.
