Who: Faculty and staff with devices on the GCN running Windows 10 (there is limited support for Windows 7)
What: Support for Windows device encryption
Why: Disk encryption protects UNCG data if your device is ever stolen or lost. It can also help the University maintain data-use agreements and lessen the risk of a serious breach.
Information Technology Services (ITS) now provides enterprise support for device encryption. The encryption solution that ITS has built includes:
- BitLocker: The encryption process native to Windows.
- Microsoft BitLocker Administration and Monitoring (MBAM): A management tool for recovery keys. When you encrypt your drive using BitLocker, there are certain circumstances that may cause your drive to become “locked”, in which case you need to obtain a recovery key to unlock it. UNCG faculty and staff can retrieve their BitLocker recovery key from the MBAM self-service portal. MBAM also provides ITS a way to recover a recovery key on behalf of a user.
For additional details about this new service, please see BitLocker @ UNCG.
This service is fully supported on devices on the GCN running Windows 10. If you run Windows 7, please see BitLocker Requirements and Setup for information on using this service.
UNCG is not mandating device encryption for any UNCG device at this time. You can elect to encrypt your device on your own by installing the MBAM Client app from the Application Catalog (see BitLocker Requirements and Setup for more information).
Departments also have the option to mandate encryption for their devices. This can be targeted to all devices in a department, or just laptops or desktops. For assistance in setting this up, please contact 6-TECH at 336-256-TECH (8234).
If you have questions or need more information, please contact 6-TECH at (336) 256-TECH (8324) or 6-TECH@uncg.edu.
