Who: Faculty and staff with devices on the GCN running Windows 10
What: Cortana web searches to be disabled by default
When: Thursday, April 12, 5:00 p.m.
After receiving feedback from Departmental Technical Support (DTS) staff and the campus community about search issues with Cortana (Microsoft’s virtual assistant), Information Technology Services (ITS) is changing the default behavior of Cortana on Windows 10 devices. Effective Thursday, April 12 at 5:00 p.m., Cortana will no longer include web searches in your Windows search results. This only affects searching from the Start Menu on Windows 10. This does not affect searches performed in web browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Edge.
If you are having the search issues addressed by this change, please restart your computer after 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. A restart is required for this change to take effect.
This is only a change to the default, out-of-the-box behavior, though it will initially apply to all Windows 10 GCN computers. If you would like to re-enable this feature, please see Cortana Web Search.
