Cisco has announced some changes to the Webex platform, to take effect with the next regular product update. Included in this update are some significant changes to the user experience for Meeting Center and Event Center, as well as an overall naming change to their product lineup.
These updates are scheduled to take place in UNCG’s Webex environments as follows:
- Webex for Faculty and Staff: the evening of Friday, July 27, 2018
- Webex for Students: the evening of Wednesday, August 1, 2018
Existing scheduled sessions and recordings will not be affected; no action is required from users.

Naming convention changes
The current naming scheme in Webex refers to each of the products as a “Center” (for example, Meeting Center and Training Center). Beginning with the upcoming update, this naming scheme will change, and no longer employ the word “Center.” Instead, the products will become Webex Meetings, Webex Training, Webex Events, and Webex Support. This change is a change in name only, and will not affect users’ access to any of the products.
Visual changes to the Webex Meetings and Webex Events platforms
The Webex Meetings platform (known currently as Meeting Center) and Webex Events platform (known currently as Event Center) will undergo two main changes – first, the user interface for the meeting experience will become more streamlined and video-centric. Second, there will be a new, integrated pre-meeting experience, allowing users to more quickly access their Webex sessions.
In the new Webex Meetings and Webex Events platforms, more emphasis has been placed on high-quality video streaming, with other controls being centralized and available via secondary icons. The main view upon entering the session is centered around video conferencing features, where users can customize the display to show up to 25 video feeds at once. Session controls and information are collapsed into icons at the bottom and side of the screen, as are the content-sharing controls.

New Pre-Meeting Experience
Previously, users could opt to download the Webex Productivity Tools application for their machine, to more quickly start and join Webex sessions. After this update, this functionality will be included as part of the base Webex application that is installed on a user’s machine when attending a Webex session; the Productivity Tools application will no longer be necessary to schedule or join Webex sessions directly from a user’s computer.
