Checking your credit report is one of the most important ways you can protect yourself online. There are many reasons you should check your credit report at least once a year. Here are five:

  1. Prevent identity theft. One of the first signs of identity theft or credit card fraud is finding unrecognized names and accounts on your credit report. The earlier you identify these types of indicators, the sooner you can take steps to prevent or minimize damage.
  2. Correct errors in the report. You can find any errors or inaccuracies and take steps to correct them.
  3. Build a better credit rating for better financial health. By keeping your credit report error-free, you may save money on interest rates for purchases.
  4. Monitor transactions you may otherwise be unaware of. It can help you keep track of financial responsibilities you may otherwise lose track of, such as medical bills you think are covered by insurance payments or loans on which you are a co-signer.
  5. It’s free!
