Information Technology Services

The hardware that hosts UNCG network file storage space, including home directories (S drives), departmental network storage (N drives), and special volumes, has reached end-of-life status and is obsolete. During Winter Break 2018, Information Technology Services (ITS) will migrate this file storage space from the old hardware to new storage solutions, according to the process described as follows.

Migration Process

For all students and for faculty and staff in academic units:

  • S drives that are active* will be migrated to new hardware.
  • S drives that are inactive* will be archived to the user’s Box account.
  • With respect to departmental network storage (N drive), ITS will continue assisting departments in moving their files to Box. (This task began last summer.) Departments will also have the option to move their department’s N drive to the new hardware. ITS will work with each Department Technology Coordinator (DTC) to determine a migration path for the department’s N drive.

*An S drive is considered “active” if it contains any files that have been modified or created in 2018. An S drive is considered “inactive” if no files have been modified or created in 2018.

For faculty and staff in non-academic units:

  • ITS will migrate all S drives to Box.
  • With respect to departmental network storage (N drive), ITS will continue assisting departments in moving their files to Box. (This task began last summer.) Departments will also have the option to move their department’s N drive to a temporary migration space on the new hardware. ITS will work with each DTC to determine a migration path of the department’s N drive. The intent is to transition all non-academic storage and collaboration to cloud technologies. However, we understand that some transition time is required. To assist with ongoing cloud storage migration efforts, this migration space will not have an associated cost for departments until July 2020.

Special volumes:

  • ITS will migrate all special volumes, such as the Banner “X drive,” to new hardware.
  • All files and folders will be migrated as-is. All access permissions will be copied.
  • At this time, there is no change to the cost of special volumes.

Next steps

We appreciate the continued collaboration of students, faculty, and staff in support of storage services that are economical, feature-rich, and meet the mobility needs required by the UNCG community.

  • ITS will work with DTCs to develop migration plans for departmental network storage (N drive).

Migration timeline

    • S drives: Friday, December 14, 6 p.m. – Monday, December 17, 7 a.m.
The migration of S drives to new hardware or to Box will occur during the stated timeframe. During this time, S drives will be marked as “read only.” You will be able to access and read the files in your S drive, but you will not be able to modify or delete files, or add new files.

    • N drives: Friday, December 21, 6 p.m. – Monday, December 24, 7 a.m.
The migration of remaining N drives will occur during the stated timeframe. During this time, N drives will be marked as “read only.” You will be able to access and read the files in your N drive, but you will not be able to modify or delete files, or add new files.

  • Special Volumes migration: Friday, December 21, 6 p.m. – Monday, December 24, 7 a.m.
The migration of special volumes will occur during the stated timeframe. During this time, all special volumes will be marked as “read only.” You will be able to access and read the files in special volumes, but you will not be able to modify or delete files, or add new files.
