Who: Faculty, staff, and students with computers running Windows 7

What: Windows 7 reaching end-of-life status on January 14, 2020

On January 14, 2020, Microsoft will discontinue Windows 7 support. After this date, Windows 7 computers will no longer receive any updates, including critical security updates. Risk for identity theft, viruses, and malware increases by using an operating system that cannot receive security patches.

All on-campus computers running Windows 7 must be upgraded to Windows 10. After January 14, 2020, computers using Windows 7 will be restricted from the UNCG network. UNCG is obligated to protect the integrity of our computing infrastructure. Unpatched, insecure, and vulnerable computers threaten other systems.

UNCG-owned computers: ITS recommends working with your technical support staff to begin updating remaining Windows 7 computers to Windows 10. There are several options, including an in-place upgrade that will leave your data and applications in-place. Do not wait until the last minute to upgrade your machine. For assistance with UNCG-owned computers, submit a 6-TECH ticket, call 6-TECH at (336) 256-TECH (8324), or email 6-TECH@uncg.edu.

Personal computers should also be upgraded to Windows 10 as soon as possible.
