Who: Owners of Windows Server 2008 or 2008R2 servers

What: Microsoft Windows Server 2008 reaching end-of-life status on January 14, 2020

On January 14, 2020, Microsoft will discontinue Windows Server 2008 support. After this date, the servers will no longer receive any updates, including critical security updates. Risk for server compromise, viruses, and malware increases by using an operating system that cannot receive security patches.

All on-campus servers running Windows Server 2008 or 2008R2 must be replaced. After January 14, 2020, servers running Windows Server 2008 or 2008R2 will be removed from the UNCG network. UNCG is obligated to protect the integrity of our computing infrastructure. Unpatched, insecure, and vulnerable computers threaten other systems in place at the university.

ITS recommends working with your technical support staff to begin rebuilding the Windows Server 2008 or 2008R2 servers. Do not wait until the last minute to begin this process.

For assistance with a UNCG-maintained server, submit a 6-TECH ticket, call 6-TECH at (336) 256-TECH (8324), or email 6-TECH@uncg.edu.
