On July 17, 2019, the US Department of Education (Department) issued a warning regarding observed attacks exploiting a known vulnerability in the Ellucian Banner software that serves as the core of many universities’ academic and business functions. The Department identified 62 colleges or universities that were affected by exploitation of the vulnerability, and cautioned any institution running an affected version of the software to upgrade as quickly as possible.
In response to the Department’s warning, Information Technology Services (ITS) assessed UNCG’s Banner systems for the vulnerability, and took steps to ensure that all Banner services are properly protected against attacks. At this time, UNCG Banner services are not vulnerable to attacks as noted in the Department’s warning.
ITS continues to actively monitor vulnerability announcements and network activities to ensure the safety and security of UNCG’s critical information resources and systems.
