Who: Faculty and staff

What: Changes to Windows operating system updates and introduction of application updates

When: June 2020 patch cycle, starting June 10, 2020

ITS is improving the experience for Windows updates on GCN computers. The new experience will install Windows updates in the background without faculty and staff having to install them, which will lead to a decrease in the amount of downtime.

Computer restarts (or shutdowns) performed during the normal course of business activities will finish the update installation, providing a seamless update experience. For computers that are not restarted regularly, improvements to the restart process give faculty and staff more time to restart, fewer notifications, and a simplified restart countdown when the restart deadline is reached.

ITS is also introducing application updates into the monthly update process. This will ensure that applications running on UNCG systems are secure and up-to-date. Users that are not administrators on their computers will also be able to keep applications up-to-date without having to involve ITS or departmental technology staff. For a list of applications that will receive monthly updates from ITS, see Managed Application Updates.
