On June 26, 2020, Information Technology Services (ITS) changed the UNCG Shibboleth Single Sign-on (SSO) authentication to allow users to log in with either their email address (email@example.com) or their username. This change provides a more consistent login experience across services. So for example, now the login process used for Gmail is the same as that used for most other services at UNCG, e.g., Canvas, Adobe, Box.
Two of the main Single Sign-on (SSO) authentication methods used at UNCG are Shibboleth and Azure.
- Examples of services that use Azure: Gmail, Office 365, ServiceNow, Zoom
- Examples of services that use Shibboleth: Canvas, Box, Adobe, Webex
Azure requires an email address (firstname.lastname@example.org), while Shibboleth requires a username.
To provide a more consistent login experience across services, ITS changed the Shibboleth authentication so that email addresses are also permitted. For most* services, then, a user doesn’t have to remember whether to log in with their email address or their username. They can consistently use their email address (email@example.com).
*Exception: Webex only accepts a username (will not accept an email address, firstname.lastname@example.org).
