Who: Faculty, staff, and students running Windows 10
What: Microsoft releases a critical patch for Windows 10 and Server 2019
On February 9, 2021, Microsoft released a critical update for Windows 10 to address a severe vulnerability in the Windows operating system. Information Technology Services (ITS) has changed the normal patching schedule for campus computing to address this vulnerability.
UNCG-owned computers: The normal patching schedule for computers has been modified so that Friday, February 12, 5:30 p.m. is the deadline for this month’s installation. The updates will be installed automatically upon powering up your computer if they are not installed before this date.
If you have a UNCG computer at home, it should update automatically on the same schedule. If it does not, connect it to the General Computing Network (GCN) using the virtual private network (VPN) to update your computer.
To install the updates early, see step 3 of Security Patches and Updates: Windows.
ITS-hosted servers: This vulnerability also affects Windows Server 2019. All servers hosted by ITS that run Server 2019 will be patched on February 12 between 12:30 a.m. and 7 a.m.
Personal computers: This vulnerability affects all installations of Windows 10. If you have a personal Windows 10 computer, patch it immediately.
