UNCG ITS News

Information Technology Services

On Wednesday, August 23, 2023, Microsoft 365 (M365) and other UNCG services will begin to display pronouns for faculty, staff, and students who have selected them in UNCGenie.

How do I make this happen?

See Select Your Displayed Personal Pronouns in UNCGenie. Selecting your pronouns ahead of Wednesday, August 23 will ensure that your pronouns will display as soon as possible.

Which services will display pronoun preferences?

  • M365 (Outlook, Office Online, Teams, etc.)
  • Canvas
  • Azure Active Directory
  • UNCG Campus Directory (Individual person view only)
  • UNCG Grouper
  • UNCG LDAP

Technical staff who administer additional software that integrates with Microsoft Active Directory, UNCG LDAP, or UNCG Grouper, may need to verify the pronouns are displayed correctly.

How will my name be displayed in M365?

  • If specified in UNCGenie, pronouns appear in parenthesis beside the displayed name.
    • Example: Sally Student’s preference in UNCGenie is set to They/Them/Theirs. Sally’s displayed name in M365 services will be: Sally Student (They/Them/Theirs).
  • If Not Applicable or Name Only: No Pronouns, are selected or if no choice is made, there will be no change to the displayed name.
    • Example: John Smith’s preference in UNCGenie is set to Name Only: No Pronouns. John’s displayed name in M365 services will be: John Smith.

How will my name be displayed in Canvas?

  • If specified in UNCGenie, pronouns appear in Canvas’s pronoun fields.
    • In some areas of Canvas, pronouns will show in parenthesis beside the display name.
    • In other areas, pronouns are displayed below the name or in a different column.

Names may display differently on other platforms, though they should display similarly.
